Amy & Dennis

Tell us about yourselves...

Dennis is an Air Traffic Controller. He was in the Navy but now works for the FAA, and is an active NATCA Union member. Amy is a teacher turned stay at home mom. She is very involved in local politics and social activism. We moved to the Houston area in 2013 from New Hampshire and have 3 young children.

How long have you been attending Oasis?

About 4.5 years.

Why do you attend Oasis?

Neither of us were from religious homes growing up. When we moved to Texas, not knowing anyone, we were bombarded with questions about our beliefs and where we went to church. Amy was dis-invited to a moms group’s activities when she politely declined a leader’s invitation to go to church. We felt very alone and needed a positive community where our whole family (including our children) would be welcomed.

What do you like most about Oasis and why?

We’ve made so many lasting connections with people. We love that Oasis has a place for children. With no family nearby to watch our children, we wouldn’t be able to attend if kids didn’t have a place with Oasis. The Kids’ room is so welcoming. Our kids have become a part of the community, too, and look forward to coming to see their friends. As they grow older, it’s a relief that they won’t be bombarded with questions and judgement about our non-belief. We also love the opportunities to give back through volunteerism.

How has Oasis made a difference in your life?

We’ve told many of our Oasis friends that we probably wouldn’t still be living in Texas if it weren’t for Houston Oasis. We felt very alone before we found this community. Oasians have stood with us through trying times, thrown us a baby shower, provided middle of the night support, brought food to us in the hospital after an unexpected stay and surgery, celebrated birthdays & anniversaries, provided us comfort in times of grief, and helped us give back and build connections. They’re our CHOSEN family!
