This talk will explore his journey from being a convicted felon who experienced a dramatic jailhouse conversion to earning a Ph.D., becoming an atheist and a professor, and publishing articles and books on the history of Black secularism. He will explore how and why he initially embraced Christianity in jail and the thinkers and authors that finally led me to abandon religion, including figures such as Jiddu Krishnamurti, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris. Hewill finish with a brief discussion of my scholarship on the history of Black atheists and agnostics.
Speaker Bio:
Christopher Cameron is Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He received his BA in History from Keene State College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in American History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research and teaching interests include early American history, the history of slavery and abolition, and African American religious and intellectual history. Cameron is the author of To Plead Our Own Cause: African Americans in Massachusetts and the Making of the Antislavery Movement and Black Freethinkers: A History of African American Secularism. He is also the co-editor of New Perspectives on the Black Intellectual Tradition and Race, Religion, and Black Lives Matter: Essays on a Moment and a Movement. He is currently writing a history of African American Unitarian Universalists from the mid-18th century to the Civil Rights era.
