Main Talk: The Secular Paradox: Challenges for Community Organizing Among Nonbelievers
Main Speaker: Aaron Rabinovitz
Music : Jes Schneider
Main Talk Description:
Nonbelievers sometimes struggle with anxiety and resistance towards crucial aspects of community organizing because they associate those aspects with religion. In particular, nonbelievers struggle with requiring that community members commit to shared rituals, beliefs, and values. This resistance creates significant challenges for secular community organizers, who often feel forced to decide which aspects of community they want to emphasize, knowing that the resulting group will seem “too much like religion” to some potential members. The goal of this talk is to help organizers identify versions of this problem in their communities and provide them tools for helping their community members feel comfortable embracing all the features needed for a flourishing community.
