—  Being an Essential Worker During Covid —  Baker Ripley, 6500 Rookin, Houston, TX

Speaker:        Perla Rivas

Main Talk:      Being an Essential Worker During Covid

Musician:       Brightwire

Speaker Bio
Perla grew up on the US-MEX border and moved to the Galveston area for work. She enjoys traveling and taking her dogs to the dog park. Her husband introduced her to Oasis while they were dating and she has loved it ever since. What was most appealing was the diversity, honesty, and vulnerability of those in attendance. She always feels like she is learning something new, while getting the chance to meditate over some amazing music.

Perla was a former Catholic living in Mexico which made it quite difficult to find other viewpoints. She slowly moved away from the church after studying abroad in college and getting to learn about others perspectives on belief systems.

Perla is on the board of directors of Galveston Bay Oasis serving as secretary.

Musician Bio:
Brightwire is an Americana trio born from a household of musicians and hailing from southeast Texas. Combining elements of folk, rock, country, punk and whatever else they happen to get interested in, they weave tales of lives lived in our world today. For them, music is about inclusion and letting others know they are not alone in their struggles.

Samuel Barker (Vocals/Guitar) came up through the Houston Americana/Alt Country scene with bands like The Wayward Sons, The Dragliners and his own solo endeavors. Kimberly Barker (Vocals/Organ) spent her youth as a member of various choirs, honing her vocal chops. And, Michael Helfenstein (Dobro) held down steel leads for The Grizzly Band before joining up with the Barkers to make Brightwire a true band.

Brightwire are also members and regular performers at the Galveston Bay Oasis chapter.
